Bawku Senior High School has been temporarily shut down by the Municipal Education Directorate following the fatal shooting of a third-year student, Hakim Kundima, on campus.
The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 26. According to sources alledged unidentified assailants reportedly scaled the school’s perimeter wall, entered the dormitory, and forcibly removed the student before shooting him in what appears to be a targeted attack. The perpetrators fled the scene immediately, and no arrests have been made as of the time of reporting.
The victim’s elder brother, Tahiru Kundima, confirmed the incident to the media, revealing that the Bawku Divisional Police Commander personally delivered Hakim’s body to the family. He suggested that the murder could be linked to the long-standing conflict in the Bawku area, which has experienced intermittent violence in recent years.
In response to the tragedy, Bawku Municipal Director of Education, Isaac Agbeko Azasoo, announced the school’s closure on Sunday, July 27, citing security concerns for students and staff.
The incident coincided with another deadly attack at Nalerigu Senior High School, where two students were also shot and killed by unknown gunmen. These events have intensified concerns about the safety of senior high school students in the region.
Investigations into the Bawku shooting are ongoing. Authorities have not yet released official information regarding the motive or potential suspects.
